Valentine Vignettes

So my thoughts and feelings on Valentine's have evolved over the years.  I went from loving it to loathing it to finally arrive at a happy indifference. That is, of course, subject to change.  Next year I might be crying in sweatpants or planning some ridiculous, over-the-top Valentine's gesture. I have a way of surprising myself in these matters.  As long as I'm not throwing a would-be Valentine's gift across a tanning salon (again) I am content.
Raspberry marbled cheesecake. I sort of overdid it on the marbling, but I think it's very pretty.
this is an experimental recipe. Roasted cabbage with fennel and apple. If it's good, I'll post the recipe.
picked-over Valentine's flowers can be pretty too.

Wishing you a happily indifferent Valentine's.
(this was the infamous gift I threw across a tanning salon at its intended recipient who dumped me. A Coach wallet in a giant box of Skittles. I'm sure they are still finding Skittles all these years later)

  1. Oh, I will just bet there's quite a story behind the Skittles-hurling lol. But that's a story for another day, I guess! That is a beautiful cheesecake, and I hope you enjoy it with friends and family this weekend. Happy Valentine's Day! (P.S. I hope you kept the Coach wallet for yourself!)

    1. Haha thank you and same to you! Nope...even better. He tried to give it back to me but I insisted he keep it. I knew him well enough that I was sure if he had it, he would use it. About two years after that he told me he still used it and felt bad every time he looked at it!

    2. Well, I'd call that a successful break-up gift then lol!

  3. Look at that marbled cheesecake! Way to go Stephen! You gotta teach me how to do it some time ;) Love the purple + lime green theme here - so pretty and springy! And honey, I would be throwing a Valentine's gift to my ex too, if the box was filled with skittles like that! I hope you grabbed the coach wallet though. Happy Valentines Day! oxox

    1. Thanks! It really is easy! Haha no Coach for me...I go for Gucci wallets! At the time the throwing of the gift felt very therapeutic! Now I just think of the mess.

    2. I enjoy Gucci too - my very favorite purse is a vintage Gucci from my mom, which I love every bit of it. Don't worry about the mess. At least you didn't throw chocolate pudding!

  9. The cheesecake is beautiful, love the marbling. And I bet the Skittles made a satisfying clatter as they scattered across the floor. Valentine's Day is over for another year which is fine by me, too.

  10. I HATE getting dumped. It's always better when you do the dumping. I love the visual of the skittles all over everywhere. Swoon!

Reminds me of a time my Wasband and I were in the middle of an argument (vehement argument) when the phone rang. Without missing a beat I picked it up, forward passed it just missing his head (too bad) and said, "It's for you." Good times!

    1. "Wasband" is my new favorite vocabulary word! Hahahaha. I would much rather be dumped than dump someone! Perhaps because I'm a Taurus but I generally think things can be worked out...and not one to make radical changes! Why am I not surprised you're a thrower too? My best/worst throw was a bowl FULL of bangles at Forever 21.

    2. OMG you make me laugh! I would have paid MONEY to see that! I kinda miss going into Forever 21.

I'm a Cancer! We'd rather lose a claw than let something go. But I'm so precious that no one better dump me.

Of course I'm totally kidding. ;)

  12. Happy Belated Valentine's Day to you.

The experiment looks good to me since we need our vegetables

  13. The cheesecake is beautiful! Reminds me of a vintage lace. And please tell us you did put the coach wallet to good use regardless of the dumped-skittle flicking fiasco. :-)

    1. Thank you! Haha nope I insisted he keep it! I've had the same black and grey gucci wallet forever and I (surprisingly) don't like to change that stuff that much! But luckily he said he felt guilty every time he looked at it :)

  14. Skittles, bangles... I love your sense of flair for the dramatic! (And the fact that they are probably still finding Skittles is hilarious).

  15. Mmm. The only thing better than cheesecake is Raspberry cheesecake!
I've been indifferent for quite a while but this year, I don't know...I just HATED it. Maybe it's all the gooey pink I'm so happy I found my soulmate and my life is perfect stuff on so many blog posts that it just got to me.
I sound bitter. Really I'm not.
OK maybe just on Valentines day. LOL!
I once threw a glass salt shaker across a crowded room. Hmmm. I don't miss that sutff.
OK, I'm back to indifference! Ha!

    1. Hahahahaha oh I really like throwing a salt shaker. Perfect on many fronts. 1)compact, you can carry in a pocket for surprise attack 2) it would burn the eyes 3) it's symbolic as well. Bitter isn't so bad! Haha

  16. Hi saw you over at FF's place, you have the funniest comments. And you know loads about MS's horses. Though me and my sisters could spar with you on anything to do with Jen (any of them actually but particularly the Aniston one) I hope she finds love. Your photos are lovely, I'm hopeless at baking but appreciate others...

  19. Hi Stephen, just found you. That cabbage and fennel looked interesting. How did it turn out?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hello! Thank you for stopping by. Haha you know unfortunately the cabbage experiment didn't work out too well. I was worried it would be bland so I way overseasoned. And the cabbage and fennel just didn't click like I thought it would. It was very pretty though!
